Why do things the easy way?

Feb 07, 2014

Is there something that you know would make your life better, but you just can't seem to do it? Well, what you're dealing with is most likely the "fear of change monster!"

Change can be scary for those darned fear monsters. To George anyway, he seems to think that if something changes, it's going to be BAD, no matter how much I try to convince him otherwise. He also seems to be under the impression that change is irreversible. Like, if the rice cooker didn't work, the pots we used before are just going to magically disappear.

If you're dealing with your fear of change monster, here's a few tips to help guide yours through the process of change:

1. First of all, realize that change is inevitable. It's going to happen, whether your fear monster likes it or not. You might as well take control over what that change is when you can. Fear monsters like control, right?

2. Play the "what's the worst that could happen" game with your fear monster. But then don't forget to play the "what's the best that could happen" game afterwards!

3. Whenever possible, make the change reversible. Not because you're planning on backing down, but to appease the fear monster. Every once in a great while, fear monsters do have a point. Like, for instance, if you want to leave your job to start drawing a cartoon and helping people (don't know where that example came from....), make sure you work really hard so that your boss loves you and you could always have your job back.

4. Play the "what would I do if I knew I was going to die a year from now" game. I'll explain. Your fear monster, when you get right down to it, is preoccupied with making sure you live as long as possible. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But it is a problem when it interferes with you living the best life possible.

Your fear keeps you alive, but it also keeps you from truly living.

It's hard for us to wrap our heads around the fact that, no matter how good of a body guard our fear monster is, we're going to die someday. All of us. Yep. And guess what, you don't get a coupon at the end of your life for the time you spent being a martyr in a crappy relationship or slaving away at a job doesn't light up your soul.

So, just for a minute, pretend like you know you've only got a year left. What would you do? What would you stop doing? What would be important to you? What people would you spend more time with? What people would you spend less time with?

And, you've probably already guessed this, but the answers to those questions are probably what you should be doing anyway.

Lots of love!

Jillian
