Why George Can't Have an iPhone
Happy Monday! (It's George's first Monday appearance and he's very excited!)
Have you ever been waiting for a text, and your fear monster starts to go some pretty weird places about why you haven't received it yet?
There are a couple of different reasons for this phenomenon. The first is that fear monsters do not do so well with a complete absence of logical facts. They have very vivid imaginations, so if you don't give them some facts to work with, they start to go a little bit crazy. Waiting for a text from someone is just one of many examples of this. It could also apply to, say, a dream you have. Perhaps your fear monster is worried you'll "fail" because they don't have all the facts! Research helps to calm them down.
The other reason why George (and most other fear monsters) can't have an iPhone is due to incorrect expectations. I don't know who started the rumor that a cell phone is supposed to be an electronic leash, but I for one will ignore my phone for hours upon hours. That doesn't mean I don't like whoever has been texting me. But if there's an expectation to respond right away, then that can cause a fear monster meltdown.
Again, this applies to more than just phones! Check your expectations! Are you expecting something to work out in a certain, specific way? Do you think there's something wrong with you if it doesn't turn out the way you expect? You might just have a fear monster that's gotten a hold of your iPhone. :-)
